Re: Selling spares or repair

Thanks for the kind words Mark. I've been through all of this (except the box) with my previous Passat but I've never stripped a gearbox before and I'm not all that confident about it. Due to family circumstances I don't get much free time these days and I'm in a position where I can't afford to hav...

Selling spares or repair

I'll be selling my sport estate in the next few weeks on a spares or repair basis mainly due to the noisy 6 speed box. I'm just trying to gauge interest at the moment. I don't want to put one over on anyone so I'm being totally honest with my description. Bad points: MOT expires September 22nd. Nois...

Re: Sport 6 speed gearbox whine

Tempting to have a go at that actually. I'm not sure if it's just diff bearings gone in mine though as the noise gets much worse when in 5th or 6th. Say I'm doing 35/40 in 4th I can hear the whine but if I change up to 5th the noise gets worse even with no increase in speed. I know the box has plent...

Re: Sport 6 speed gearbox whine

I do like the car and were it not for the gearbox problem I wouldn't hesitate address the other stuff. As you rightly say, the other things are just consumables. A total gearbox failure would see it off to the scrapyard which is why I'm considering cutting my losses now. I wouldn't sell it on to any...

Sport 6 speed gearbox whine

Hi All My sport estate is due an MOT in a couple of months. It could do with new control arms and a wheel bearing. I'm trying to decide whether or not to go ahead and order the parts or move it on as spares or repair now that the box is getting a bit louder. I know from bitter experience that the ch...

Re: B5.5 aftermarket HU

I've settled on a Pioneer DEH-S4000BT. It's a recently released model and seems to do everything I need. Went into Halfords to buy a Sony but found this to be more user friendly and easier on the eye. Will slot the old Gamma tape deck back in for now to fill the extra hole. Went round a few local br...

A pillar trim removal

I'll be fitting my new radio tomorrow and running a wire for the bluetooth mic. Is there anything I need to look out for when removing this trim? I've heard something about a clip which must be replaced due to the curtain airbag. I was expecting a screw under the little plastic cover with 'airbag' p...

Re: Sticking rear pad/calliper?

They might well have been knackered. On my current car the handbrake lever on one of the calipers was seized. I freed it off by removing the caliper and working the lever back and forth with vise grips for about 20 minutes and so far so good. My previous Passat really needed the calipers replaced an...

Intermittent rough running/misfire AVF

Hi All Been having this problem on and off for a couple of months now. Sometimes on a light throttle, such as when holding 30 mph in 4th the car will judder violently as though it were running out of fuel, flooring it briefly seems to rectify this. Today, while going right on a roundabout it seemed ...

Re: B5.5 aftermarket HU

The car must have had an aftermarket setup at some point as two of the wires have been teed into with scotchlocks  I can't solder but I'll improve this with proper crimp connections. I take it this has been done to make the illumination of an aftermarket unit come on with headlamps and power ...

Re: B5.5 aftermarket HU

I have an android system, and have had several, Ive installed them, modded them etc. The proper choices are excellent, but youll be paying +/- the £300 mark for the right ones. I like the idea of these but to be totally honest I'm not all that tech savvy and probably don't spend enough time in the ...

Re: gearbox whine

Regarding the shuddering problem I've heard of driveshafts causing this, specifically shot inner joints. If it is the shafts there are new J&R shafts on ebay for £40 posted. I recently fitted one myself and the quality seems good.

Cheers

Re: gearbox whine

Having just replaced clutch and dmf midweek, I checked my gearbox oil level, bearing in mind I changed the gearbox oil in the summer. When I did change it, I was expecting to put in 2.3 litres, but after 1.5 it was coming out of the filler hole which I thought strange. Anyway, while I had the box o...

Re: B5.5 aftermarket HU

Don't trust Halfrauds for any advice , they can't even get high volume batteries recommendations right . It's ISO to ISO alright , no facia adapter either . 7" screen double din with a reversing camera is a great tool . http://rs1310.pbsrc.com/albums/s645/Gazwould/f4df3360-c276-4454-81e0-5b0c2...

dubber36 wrote: Sat Dec 16, 2017 5:39 pm Why not get a radio with DAB?
Price really, I'm looking to keep costs down. You can get a single din unit with bluetooth or DAB for about £70 but if you want both it's about double the price. If choosing between the two I'd take bluetooth every time.

Re: B5.5 estate Sport - Wheel Choice Advice

You know what George ? Neither have I :-s I'm sure there are some detailed posts on here about it somewhere, will have a look. Basically, due to the design of the front suspension, the toe changes as the suspension moves through it's travel and the height of the track rod end can be adjusted to kee...

Re: B5.5 aftermarket HU

Because VW used 2 x single din wit a middle supporting shelf the aperture is taller and slightly wider than double din. The advice to use an insert adapter is correct. They should have also told you you need an inline antenna amplifier, as aftermarket units dont amplify the aerial, whereas the oem ...

B5.5 aftermarket HU

Hi All Have decided to replace my knackered Gamma tape/6 disc dash changer with aftermarket. Have yet to decide whether to buy a double din unit or go cheap and leave the changer in to fill the extra gap. According to halfords I will need a facia adaptor to go double din and will need a wiring adapt...

Re: B5.5 estate Sport - Wheel Choice Advice

Probably the most boring suggestion yet but I love the original 16" Road America wheels. I would spend a couple of hundred quid having them properly refurbed and keep them. Car will ride better than it would on anything bigger and tyres will be cheaper as 205/55R16 is a very common size these d...

B5.5 estate interior lights

Can anyone tell me the bulb number for the rear interior lights? It's a weird little thing which needs a quarter turn to remove. I thought the bulb had just burned out on the o/s/r interior light in my car, but it turns out someone has previously removed the bulb. I hope that wasn't to cover up a CC...

Quite puzzled as to why this currently has less than 20k signatures. The majority of cars I see on the roads are diesel powered, many are new or nearly new and must have cost the owners a lot of money.

Re: Reporting untaxed /uninsured vehicles

Just playing devils advocate for a minute, how about sticking a note under the windscreen wiper advising them that it will be reported in a weeks time etc as it's untaxed. I recently bought my mates Highline that he's had since end of Nov 2016, when I went online to tax it it said that it's not bee...
