Well, so far you've done more than I have about this problem, so you're way ahead of me!

As far as I'm aware, if the sniffer test points something out, then it's not a good thing.
If you can, warm the car up (15 mins) and then get a mate to rev ...

I posted a similar problem with my B5.5 PD130, did the lot, changed the header tank, header tank cap, water pump, radiator and all this didnt stop the issue of loosing coolant, so finally did the head gasket, it hadnt gone all together it had only just started to go but with a visit to GSF for seal ...

As far as i know the HG has not been changed no, ive changed the rad, fitted a new water bottle and new cap but it still seems to be loosing water, as mentioned it does not affect the temp of the car thats fine, only on long journeys does the sensor go off indicating i need more water, at the moment ...

by header tank cap do you mean the water bottle cap because ive changed that???
