Hi and thanks for all the replies. My golf has the 1.8 20v unit in it which is still smooth at 167k. How can I tell if the passat has an 8 or 20v unit in it. if you follow that pipe down under the manifold it also goes to a rubbery collector thing that may be an issue,it seems all those pipes dont do well in all that heat.

I have a 5.5 sport estate, the 2.0 20v ALT engine, Like the others have posted as far as modding goes you cant do much to improve performance etc, Road tax isn't cheap and the economy cant touch the diesels, and to be honest it doesn't feel as responsive as the old diesel, I had a B 5 1.9 TDi before...

Is your engine code AZM? I see it uses Simos injection not Bosch (ALT), maybe the air pump is failing or the system clogged?

Does it have alloys or just trims? could be a stone rolling around in the wheel.

Is it there when stationary? rev the motor and see if the pitch changes, maybe a loose baffle in an exhaust box.
