Re: Replacement alternator loose on bracket
I'm pretty sure you do need the special tool do to it up. Should be done up by hand, you need a torque wrench that goes backwards if I recall, 80Nm rings a bell. I found easiest to put the special tool in a big vice at the nut end, drop the alternator onto the spline side and then insert the torque ...

Re: rattly engine cover
On mine it is just the screw cover caps that rattle in their holes. Removing these removes the rattles. I fitted a bit of cloth tape to the back surfaces which tightened them up a bit and reduced rattles.

Re: AVF 1.9PD engine revs dropping / increasing around 1700rpm
Thanks, I did wonder if that might be a possible cause. May well give it a go, hopefully the gearbox isn't goosed. It will be a bit long since it was last done... (120K miles).

Re: AVF 1.9PD engine revs dropping / increasing around 1700rpm
Mine is a tiptronic auto, so no DMF. Toque converter between engine and gearbox. But same could apply. If I can get someone to drive my car for a while I want to do some looking at the live data in VCDS to see if I can spot anything (like torque converter unlocking, or injector weirdness etc).

AVF 1.9PD engine revs dropping / increasing around 1700rpm
Would really appreciate some input with my old Superb (basically a PassatB5.5) See video here: https://youtu.be/x6R4rOJ-_3w?t=144 (phone on a mount on side window, sorry for vibrations) 1.9PD 130 AVF tiptronic with 226K miles on it. Around 1700rpm the car seems unable to maintain steady revs, dippin...

Re: matrix?
Yes mate, definitely flush out old coolant once matrix has changed, in best way try to flush plenty of water through engine and front rad, just so you get all that k-seal thing out from everywhere in system. I used something similar or the same k-seal due to head gasket failure last summer, of cour...

If it cracks from the bottom up with no obvious sign of damage it is possible it has been damaged when the scuttle trim has been re-installed. If the trim isn't cleaned then grit can crack the screen. Ask me how I know...

Re: Snub/Torque mount
I think the advice on top vs bottom of the mount depends on whether you have manual or automatic gearbox (I recall they're different). How can type of gearbox affect anything in engine mounts. On the same type engine in the same chassis engine mounts will be the same. Gear box mounts might be in li...

Not sure I'd chance it. AVF gearbox is already on the design limits for torque from what I understand (it is a ZF 5HP19). They like to self-destruct as it is.

Push in the tank air vent if still fitted and get an extra gallon or more in the expansion vessel

Re: Seized locking nut problem
My boss had this issue the other day. RAC came to him with a tool with single use inserts that get driven into the nut and then the nut taken out. Really worked. It wasn't very expensive per wheel if I recall. I guess the RAC get this all the time. If you see a patrolman stopped somewhere maybe have...

Re: Polo CGPB 1.2 12V not starting, cam sensor fault, popped pipe
Sounds like that is more than likely. Got some more info out of the patients owner... Apparently it hadn't been running right for a few days and had the oil light on despite having enough oil, so he drove it for a fair bit and then when it "stopped in traffic" it made a hell of a racket. I...

I chickened out - with the discount the right one was less than £15 so I went for that. When I come to fit it I'll show the clearance to the clip for anyone interested.

Polo CGPB 1.2 12V not starting, cam sensor fault, popped pipe
Brother-in-laws 1.2 12V CGPB Polo died in traffic - a few attempts to start / jump start by him and my brother, in the end they pushed it to a car park. I got over yesterday to have a look - several fault codes, cleared them, attempted to start (turns but doesn't start), only code remaining is cam s...

Re: Activated charcoal pollen filters
Ah that explains it. The taller filter is probably better if you don't have the clip. A bit more weight to keep it down and probably a tighter fit at the back. Eurocarparts have 30% off this weekend and my local have it in stock so going down to pick one up now as I've used up my last Mann carbon fi...

Re: Electrical issues
Yeah on both LHD and RHD they locate the TCU on the right of the car and the CCM on the left of the car. So in the US the pollen filter seal failing (which is more common than the ECU) soaks the TCM. They had a class action suit about it in the US and got VW to pay out to put it right.

Re: Electrical issues
TCU is the gearbox computer. It is located in the UK driver side footwell inside a plastic tub and can suffer from water damage if car has been wet inside. Also the wiring and connections can be corroded from water. With lots of intermittent electrical gearbox faults that would be the one to go for.

Re: Windscreen top seal/weather strip
It comes glued to the screen. If you don't have it I guess you are fitting a second hand screen? I don't imagine VW sell it separately.
Apparently windscreen fitters do have this kind of thing on a roll so they can repair them if they get a screen to fit where it has been damaged.

Re: V71 air flow flap positioning motor.....
V68 is the only flap that really controls temperature per se. It controls the mixing of hot and cold air from the heating and cooling circuits. V71 controls Fresh air into the cabin. Fresh air is at whatever temperature it is outside plus a bit of engine temp. So it isn't really right to say v71 bei...
