Is it possible to remove the alternator without removing thefront end and outting it in service position. Had a quick look and it looks like the mountain bolts might be withdrawn between the blades of the fan.

That's an interesting thought, I have been getting a screaming sound on start up and for a minute or two after driving away. I checked the serpentine belt and it seems very loose. Might this be caused by a failing clutch pulley?
