Try having a word with a local sign-making company. They use vinyl for a lot of the lettering etc on signs so will have stuff that is designed to work outdoors and to not fade. Plenty of colours too! Just a thought.

Assuming this is a manual gearbox, have a close look at the operating system for the gear change, particularly the ends of the cables. Any wear here that causes lost movement will make gear selection difficult.
