Re: wanted ecu & dizzy
I know you have this error code etc, but have you tried another ignition coil? (sometimes now called a transformer). I have had 3 of these fail and give no spark, but all checked out ok using a meter.... they were breaking down under load. If you have tried another coil with no luck then please acce...

Re: anyone done PAS conversion?
Not sure how practical this is, but I would be inclined to disconnect both track rods at their rack ends and try it with them disconnected just to make sure that the problem is actually related to the rack, the PAS system or even the steering column and not further on. It may be that you have a defe...

Re: help! she wont start!
Strongly suggest you try another ignition coil, - from a breaker if that keeps the cost down though they are on ebay new at £10 -15. The windings (primary & secondary) may well check ok your coil, but what can happen is that the insulation breaks down internally allowing the HT to short to grou...

Re: anyone done PAS conversion?
Everyone has their own decision to make but there I no way on Earth I would ever give up power steering, esp on a car the size and weight of a B3/B4! There is a company in Wolverhampton who can supply seal kits at about £30... could you recondition it yourself? http://steeringseals.com/kits.html Th...

Re: B4 rear drums
Your sticking brake may be down to the hydraulic (rubber) hose that is in line to that particular wheel. These hoses can, with age, collapse internally. If that happens, when you apply the brake the pressure of the fluid will force the collapsed hose open and allow the fluid through to apply the bra...

Re: b3 heater fault - easy fix
Highly unlikely that there is a difference in the resistor you have fitted. It is far more likely that the blower motor has gone tight or is failing in some other way, such as a worn commutator.... If it has, it will draw more current, the resistor will heat up as a result of passing more current, a...

It is replaced as an assembly, a metal cup that appears to have been filled with rubber (in fact the oil is inside it all). GSF stock them.... one such item is here http://www.gsfcarparts.com/101vg0230 NOTE. I am not saying this is the right one for your car as I do not know the year.... I provide t...

Re: Judder?
The part number may vary depending on the engine and transmission, (petrol/Diesel, auto/manual), so you need to check against your specific car. GSF and the like can supply these... £26 - £32 as a guideline figure. VW may or may not be more expensive of course. Changing is easy with a few tools: h...

This photo is not actually a VW mount but is similar, and shows the kind of thing you are looking for: http://i1138.photobucket.com/albums/n525/midorimdx/IMG_0897.jpg The split/break in the rubber can easily hide from view under the metal flange and engine bracket. Be sure to lift the engine enough ...

Re: Judder?
It is highly likely that you both need to replace the front engine mount (which is hydraulic). Look down between the radiator and the engine block and you will see the item in question. You can view a diagram of it here: http://volkswagen.workshop-manuals.com/passat-b3/images/passat-b3-2646.png Ordi...

Re: Cooling fans
With the engine running but BEFORE the engine has reached temp, switch the aircon off and see if the fans stop.... they probably will. When the aircon is on the fans run all the time... this is normal. In any case, if the temp gauge shows the normal (appx 90C), I would not worry about it as the ther...

Near the blower you will see e a rectangular plastic panel, probably white, with an electrical connector... remove the panel and you will find the resistor on the other side of it.... see here..... http://oi50.tinypic.com/21lvk2x.jpg It is highly unlikely that the resistor has failed. It is far more...

Re: Fan not working?
I am obviously not grasping what you are saying. I think you said that the connector on the fan motor had broken... if that is so, how did you manage to connect the battery given that a terminal in the motor connector has broken off? If I have misunderstood, please explain again or upload some pics ...

Re: Water in rear quarter panel??
Remove the tail light lens that is installed in the rear wing, above the plastic bin. You may find a rust hole there which is hidden from view when the lens is in place. If not, then try removing the black trim strip that runs the length of the roof, above the doors. It snaps in and out of place, th...

Re: Fan not working?
When you tested it using the car battery, how did you connect the negative (earth) if the battery to the motor, given that the terminal in the motor plug has broken off? Did you connect the battery negative to the metal body of the fan motor?

Re: Starting issues
Your old battery is reading 12v or so because you are drawing no current from it so it is not under any load. Were you to have measured its voltage while the starter was cranking (or the ignition switch was at the start position), you would have found that the voltage was a lot lower, Indeed, the vo...

Re: Starting issues
Buy yourself a voltmeter (multimeter). You do not need to spend a fortune, a little digital one for a fiver or so will be fine. You can get such things easily in any hardware-type shop that stocks tools... if there is a QD Stores near to you they will certainly have one. Measure the voltage across t...

You adjust the tension on the other belt (the non-alternator belt), by moving the power steering pump. Have a look at this photo of a PAS pump: http://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x350/maclee62/passat%20bits/100_8967.jpg The adjuster is that bolt to the right of the pulley in this photo. Re: Rear Wheel Bearings doing my head in!
If I were you I would set it up as described before, which gives movement of the thrust washer and seems to give excessive play (though this is normal), tighten it up a little just before the MoT and back it off afterwards, (see my previous post) so as to avoid an argument with the tester. Then just...

Re: Tail gate lights not working
A visual check of the wires may not be enough as the conductors can fracture inside the insulation without the insulation itself breaking. It is unlikely that all the wires will have broken (certainly not all at once), but if the earth (brown) wire for the bootlid has failed there will be no earth r...
