Re: B5 boot wont lock

Not locking with the key, do you mean that if you put the key in the boot lock, you can not turn it to where you need to to lock the boot? Also, after you lock the car, if you open the boot does the alarm sound? If so, then you need to get your local VW place to order in a new locking motor, remembe...

Re: Viscous fan is always on

Like desertstorm said, one fan is a viscous coupled drive driven by the auxiliary belt, the other fan is mounted on to an electric motor. There will be different residual magnetic fields etc at different points, motor has many pole pairs and will end up with a selection of preferred "stopping&q...

Re: Valeo vs Bosch aero wipers.

When I had my old B5 Passat, I tended to get local VW dealer to order in genuine - ie as fitted at factory, blades, so that would mean Valeo as they were pre-Aero, other than the fact that they tended to be assembled for LHD they were good - needed to rotate the arm fitting part. What really annoys ...

Re: radio code

I imported a B5 new from NL in 2000 so it came with no ICE, I bought a new Gamma from local VW dealer and fitted it - it could be removed from car and refitted and it always got recognised by the B5. I imported a 9N Polo new from NL in 2002, and still smarting from the cost of buying a new Gamma for...

Re: Brakes - discs, pads, which?!

I used ATE Power Discs three times, got them from ECP price seems to shot up though, the reason I bought and fitted them was to avoid the nasty feeling you get when after long periods of motorway driving in winter with wet salty conditions, you find that initially you have no retardation. These disc...

Re: Help with alloy centre cap please

I think that it will always be difficult to get centre caps from another even another VAG marque to fit. I bought a set of Audi Aero and wanted to sort out the centre caps before using them, I even bought some "good" filler to fill in the recess left when you remove the Audi badge - but th...

Solved - replaced the hazard warning switch/relay and all is well. £12.50 from GSF :esm Sorry I did not see your opening posting, I had this a few years ago, and as luck would have it, I had bought a newer version of that switch/relay a few months earlier. Re: Wing mirrors operate independently?

I've forgotten how, but what you describe is correct. The logic is that if you want to drop them for reversing, then when you move one the other follows. It could be that you need to adjust the driver's side first - ignoring what the other side is doing, then switch to the other side and adjust it -...

I have a dc current clamp meter, I want to know if it is suitable of dc only or can be used in AC also. dc current clamp meter I'd doubt if you would make much sense of AC currents using that as it's for DC use. If you did some checks AC values using this and AC values using an ordinary DMM you wou...

MIne does that, doesn't move much though If you are meaning the gear lever moving when going on, coming off throttle, yes mine has done that all its life from new. (big fat/heavy 2.8 V6) To the OP, its the price to pay for having nice soft compliant front mounting, APR used to make a nice hard one ...

Re: front top strut mounts b5.5 tdi

The easy answer is VW, and no, well at least the B5 has no bearings, that is why you need to line the top up correctly relative to the bottom when replacing the spring or damper. I had some red rubber grease, so slapped that on both sides of the top and bottom pads - so the car would find its own co...

No, the good or bad news is the S4 3.0 has twin Eaton super chargers with water intercoolers!

That is much as I know so far - I had previously thought they would all only have turbos - but no it seems!

NEXT CAR A4 3.2FSI OR S4 ?

The time has come to consider changing my car, I've had it from new back in late May 2000 and done 88,000 miles with no problems except a broke front spring. So what to chose to replace? For common sense and for a reasonable ride quality, I'd like to think that a manual A4 3.2FSI without real "...

Re: fuel pump?

VAG, and others, started this fuel system priming a long time ago, then about 10 years ago some, including VAG, changed it so that when the driver's door was opened, the fuel system was primed. My 2000 Passat B5 does it when the ignition key is turned ON, my wife's 2002 Polo 9N does it when the driv...

ADJUSTING HANDBRAKE CABLE ON A 4MOTION

Has anyone adjusted the handbrake on a four wheel drive Passat B5? I've just replaced a calliper and now the handbrake lever comes up 6 clicks, which might get a thumbs down at its MOT. I had hoped that the new pads and calliper would "settle in" by now but not so! It looks like VAG moved ...

I'm using it in my wife's Polo 9N 1.4 16v really just to try to clean the engine internals up - though it does give it a lot more grunt - and that engine needs it!! I have also been using Esso's "good" petrol in my 2.8 V6 Passat which probably makes it feel better, though that car's engine...

Re: Wiper Issues

As said already, that is the way these rain sensing wipers work, ie you need to switch them off>on which is a bit of a nuisance on these earlier cars. The "bounce" will be due to wear in the linkage, you can't sort this by rotating the arms as it will foul the bottom of the screen. only ot...

Yes, they are definately there, a bit more difficult to reach than on the B5.5 I believe, I've only taken my car to Europe twice and used bits of Lucas headlight masking stuff as that both times, there was no real advice on this subject - and that includes a local dealer, and then they talked to VWU...

Your options for foglights, unfortunately, the first one is Chinese poo - I've bought it and not fitted it, it would need a lot of fabricating of brackets as its not a complete turnkey solution. The second one is as it says, for the B5.5 so it will not be a turnkey solution. I don't think that there...
